A glowing jar of seaweed and a quick flashback to the market are enough to name the father, and then two clocks start: a throne that needs an heir by the night of the gala, and a community that has begun to count Kira as one mouth too many. The villainy is drawn broadly, but the setup is quick and the stakes are personal.
